The first thing that strikes me about any directory, no matter how good the interface design is the PageRank and Alive Web Directory has a very high PR of 5 for its aptly titled main category pages and each of their meticulously maintained inner page dips to a 4 at the maximum, if at all. They have a huge number of quality backlinks, which is the secret to their high PageRank, thus making them one of the most viable directories to get your site listed in. Also, Google recognizes Alive Directory as an authority site and you can be assured of having your site listed in a directory that is a preferred site crawled by Google.
The have just one external site wide link which makes Alive Web Directory extremely search engine friendly. I find the prices suited to their web status and they limit regular listings to 10 per page. While featured listings are unlimited, you can pay US$34.95 to have an entire category page with PR4 to yourself. Their submissions are far easier and you don’t have to choose categories or register yourself. For faster and focused submissions you can choose their 3 deep links which are featured resources like their Business Web Directory at , Shopping Web Directory at and Computer Web Directory at which allow for well categorized listings and sub listings. I see Alive has a potential for both, search engine friendliness and a high PR which are what make a good web directory.
The only thing that I can’t say I dislike but could be definitely worked on is the layout but then, it could be worse and at least they don’t have chunks of links decorating their header and footer space and flashing banners all over the place. They also have fewer categories clogging their directory and a spartan layout with great features is far better in my humble opinion.
